I am not able to grow blue hydrangeas in Florida but have been able to buy potted plants that will last a season.  A great substitute that I have found for the Hydrangea is the the Seminole Dombeya.  It grows large pink hydrangea like blooms and is a strong and sturdy plant for the South Florida.  In fact, it can take a hard cut back and blooms twice a year.  The bees love the flowers.  Since I can't grown one of my favorite blooming flowers, I often just paint them so I can enjoy the blooms all year long!
